Independent Evaluation of the Functional Skills Pilot (Client: Qualifications, Curriculum and Development Authority, 2009)

Professor David Greatbatch worked on this project on behalf of AlphaPlus Consultancy Ltd. His contributions included case study visits to centres involved in the pilots, analysis of qualitative data, and preparation of reports for QCDA.

 Provision of Recording and Reporting of Functional Skills Evaluation Events (Client: Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, 2009) 

Professor David Greatbatch was lead evaluator on this project, which was undertaken by the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Lifelong learning and AlphaPlus Consultancy Ltd. The project involved 8 regional consultation events for centres involved in piloting the functional Skills,

 Phase 4 Diploma Learning Panels – Research and Facilitation (Client: Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, 2009)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, was the lead evaluator on this project which was being undertaken by AlphaPlus Consultancy Ltd. The project involved the provision of research and event facilitation services to investigate learner attitudes to the Phase 4 Diploma subject areas in Science, Humanities and Languages.

 Evaluations of the Pilot GCSEs in Mathematics, Welsh, English and ICT  (Client: Welsh Assembly Government, 2008-2009)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, led these evaluations on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham. The evaluations were commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government in order to identify what worked well and what would need to be changed or refined if pilot GCSEs in Mathematics, Welsh, English and ICT were to be rolled out nationally in Wales.

 Evaluation of the Association for Science Education and Design and Technology Association School Technicians NVQ Programme (Client: Gatsby Technical and Education Projects, 2005-2009)

The Gatsby Foundation commissioned Greatbatch Associates to conduct an independent evaluation of this three-year programme, which  established new arrangements for the professional development of school technicians, including the delivery of new NVQ qualifications.

 The Future Role of the Recognition Process in the Economic and Social Research Councils’s Accreditation of Research Provision (Client: Economic and Social Research Council, 2007-2008)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, co-led this project on behalf of Durham Business School at Durham University.  The aim of the review was to evaluate the ESRC’s current arrangements for the recognition of masters courses and PhD programmes within the social sciences and to assist in identifying how the Council can best continue to conduct this quality assessment in the most suitable and cost effective way.

 Improving Written GCSE Examinations (Client: Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, 2007-2008

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, co-led this project on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham. The aim of the project was to consider and evaluate the validity, reliability and effectiveness of written GCSE examination papers used across three subjects (French, History and Geography) in order to identify (a) issues with current written GCSE examinations and (b) features that would improve both the assessment and its impact on teaching.

 Leadership and Public Speaking in Higher Education (Client: Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, 2007)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, co-led this project on behalf of Durham Business School at Durham University.  The project examined the preparation, delivery and impact of speeches and presentations by academic leaders and formulated a set of guiding principles underpinning good practice in the delivery of speeches and presentations by academic leaders.

 Evaluation of YMCA Training Provision for School Pupils (Client: YMCA Training Ltd, 2006-2007).

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, led this project on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham. The project was designed to improve the YMCA senior management teams’ understanding of the ‘alternative curriculum provision’ that YMCA Training Centres were offering schools and their pupils, and to make an assessment of what value the work brought.

 Generic Employability Skills II (Client: South West Regional Skills Partnership, 2006-2007)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, led this project on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham.  The project mapped programmes involved in the delivery of employability skills training in Schools, Further Education, Work Based Learning, Higher Education and by others supporting young people in the South West of England; identified examples of good practice; developed a guide to the replication of good practice in a range of provider settings; and made recommendations for regional policy makers and practitioners.

 Evaluation of the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification Pilot (Client: The National Assembly for Wales, 2005-2006)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, led this evaluation on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham. The project dealt with the design, delivery and effectiveness of the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification Pilot. It involved a major survey as well as detailed case study visits and led to a decision by the Welsh Assembly Government to roll out the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification throughout Wales.

 Evaluation of the Key Skills Support Programme, April 2004-March 2005 (Client: Department for Education and Skills, 2005-2006)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, led this evaluation on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham. The research established how effective the delivery of the Key Skills Support Programme  (KSSP) had been in terms of achieving its objectives, reaching target groups, methods of delivery and performance of the managing agents, and identified key successes and milestones as they occurred over the life of the KSSP.

 Evaluation of Wellcome Trust Pilot 183 Public Engagement Projects (Client: The Wellcome Trust Foundation, 2005-2006)

The Welcome Trust commissioned Greatbatch Associates to conduct an independent evaluation of a programme of public engagement with science projects which used novel approaches to public engagement such as image theatre, drama, role-play, and post cards in cafes. The project developed an evidence base to inform the commissioning of a programme of public engagement activities for the Welcome Trust’s new premises as 183 Euston Road on London, and identified best practice in respect of the evaluation of these activities

 .Evaluation of Personality Disorder Training Initiative (Client: Department of Health, 2004-2006)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, led this evaluation on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham. The purpose of the evaluation was to draw lessons for the NHS from the early experiences of those designing and delivering Personality Disorder Training Initiatives in eight Regions, who received funding in Spring 2004. In addition to  conducting over-arching formative and summative evaluation of the training initiatives, the project also supported the development and implementation of sustainable local evaluation plans in each Region.

 Evaluation of NHS Service Development Initiatives in Genetics  (with Institute for the Study of Genetics, Biorisks and Society (IGBiS) and CDELL) (2004-2006).

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, managied CDELL’s contribution to this project, which included running workshops on evaluation and supporting the internal evaluation of service developments.

 Generic Employability Skills – Aspiration, Provision and Perception, (Client: Gloucestershire Learning and Skills Council, 2003-2004)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, led this project on behalf of the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning (CDELL) at the University of Nottingham. The project looked at the extent to which reported shortages of generic employability skills among young people (aged 16 to 21) are 'real' or the product of employer perceptions, and the extent to which 'needs', identified by employers and young people, are addressed through employability skills programmes and policies.

 Dissemination Phase of ‘The Validity and Transferability of NVQ’s in the Workplace Project (Client: Department for Education and Employment, 2002-2003)

Greatbatch Associates’ principal consultant, Professor David Greatbatch, was a member of the core team at the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Learning at the University of Nottingham, which undertook this multi-stage study of the extent to which learning acquired in the course of an NVQ was transferable to the workplace setting subsequently occupied by the individual concerned.
